After moving across town and being assured by a few isp's that connecting to ADSL2+ shouldn't be a problem, I gleefully contacted Optus to get myself reconnected.
Öh, we don't service that area."
This small fact had obviously escaped their notice when I first gave them the new address 4 weeks ago.....mmmmmmmmmm.
Move onto the next isp...
"Yes, you can have ADSL2+, just need to check your lines"
2 days later, a phone call to tell me that I couldn't get ADSL2+ (something about sharing a line and not enough copper) and it would take them a week to see if I could get ADSL......mmmmmm
NEXT.....Hello Telstra
After what seemed like a reassuring phone call and the expectation that a modem would be showing up at my door in the next 5 days, I did a little jig, unpacked another box and tried to find all unit notes ;) ;)
Meanwhile, on the other side of town.....
Another phone call to tell me that even though the new house if physically located less than 1km from a ADSL2+ enabled exchange there is over 3.5km of cabling between us which means transmission is degraded and my only options are wireless or the dreaded dial-up!!!
If I lost $60 I would be angry with myself, if I lost $60 kg I would consider it a miracle but the loss of 60gb left me despondant.
How do you complete an internet course when you don't have access to the internet??? Thankfully I have rediscovered the wonders of the local library and the quest for decent, affordable home access to the net continues.

Not only that how are you going to read the news, do your banking, shopping, book airlines, watch TV and more importantly communicate.
While I could get by, life without the net would be somewhat less shiny. I feel for you Jax.
I highly recommend Exetel, affordable and reliable. May not be able to service you with a +2 connection but their 8MB connection may suffice.
That is really hard. I had never even thought of going to the library.
Strangely with Simon reccomending Exetel that is the second time today that I have had that and I had never heard of it.
